Fresh off his fourth stint at the Winter Olympics, freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy is celebrating a new personal milestone.
On Wednesday, the 2014 silver medalist confirmed that he and his boyfriend, Australian finance executive Andrew Rigby, had gotten engaged while vacationing in Mallorca, Spain.
“He said he’d think about it,” he cheekily wrote on Instagram alongside a carousel of images documenting the proposal, which took place on a cliff overlooking the ocean.
In an interview with People published later that day, Kenworthy and Rigby reflected on their two-year relationship, revealing that they’d first crossed paths nearly a decade ago in Sydney, Australia.
In 2024, they reconnected at a mutual friend’s birthday party in Guadalajara, Mexico, after which they began a long-distance romance. Last year, they moved in together in New York.
As for the proposal itself, Kenworthy told the outlet it came after a busy trip across Europe that included stops at Germany’s Berlin Pride and Amsterdam Pride in the Netherlands.

“We had already made the plan to go to Mallorca at the end of our trip as a little decompression and it felt like the perfect opportunity for the proposal,” he said.
Added Rigby: “We’ve talked about this a lot obviously, but I thought this was just a relaxing vacation. To say I was shocked was an understatement.”
Kenworthy, who was born in England but grew up in the U.S., came out as gay in a 2015 interview with ESPN. In recent years, the athlete has branched out into film and TV acting while becoming a staunch advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump’s administration.
In February, he drew a flurry of conservative criticism online when he shared a frosty message against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that appeared to have been written in urine.
Days later, he defended his decision to post the image, noting: “I think it’s important to say what we feel and stand up for what we believe in and stand up to injustice.”
“You can love the U.S. and be proud to be an American ― I am ― and still think it can be better and still think that the country can improve,” he explained on Instagram. “Just because you love the U.S. doesn’t mean you stand with this administration and stand behind their policies and their legislation and support the things that they support, because I don’t.”
